The Winter Dictionary: 148 Words Resembling Our Warmth 겨울어 사전
A Winter Dictionary, a book that brings out the words held quietly in our hearts as we look back on the passing seasons, has now been published. After A Summer Dictionary, which deeply reflected on the time of summer and the words bound to it, we now arrive at winter. This volume contains 148 words gathered from the editors of Achimdal, authors previously published by Achimdal, and the readers themselves. Life Pattern Korea.
Words related to Korea's winter—such as “black tree rings, winter eyes, hibernation, snowman, end-of-term ceremony, fluff, Christmas, breath, coat…”—quickly evoke familiar images, yet here they are reshaped through someone's memory into new forms and new stories. In addition, words that gain new meaning when dressed in winter—such as “alphabetical order, the gathering of people who grow small in winter, airport, Ferris wheel, hideout, camera”—are collected in diverse ways. Life Pattern Korea. The title of the introductory note, “Snow Is the Blanket of Barley,” comes from a proverb meaning that the snow falling during winter prevents the barley from drying out before it sprouts in spring. A Winter Dictionary was woven together with the hope that the words we carry inside us may someday become a warm blanket of snow that keeps our hearts from drying.
Just as the introduction says, a dictionary is “a book that tells us nothing unless opened, but once a word is knocked on, countless stories spill out—far more than we realize.” Life Pattern Korea. Beginning from a single word, moving through the scenes intertwined with memory, and arriving at meaning, this book invites readers to explore their own winter words and search for the quiet, beautiful meanings that winter can hold.
