Play with Korean Acrostics: When You Want to Clear Your Head
There is a Korean idiom, “As easy as eating cold porridge,” which refers to something being very easy and effortless. That’s how most Koreans feel about writing two-syllable acrostic poems — a light, humorous form of linguistic play that’s widely enjoyed. Life Pattern Korea. But even this seemingly simple word game becomes tricky when a few conditions are added. For instance:
1. The given keyword must not start the line as a sentence, and
2. The lines must still retain the original meaning, nuance, or essence of the word.
This book is a creative collection of acrostic poems designed around those two rules. It celebrates the beauty and playfulness of the Korean language. Life Pattern Korea. All the poems written by copywriter Kwon Soo-gu, as well as the entries submitted by the public during the 13-month campaign “Challenge! I’m a Copywriter Too”, follow this format.
Starting with a sharp poetic line like “Books hurt more when thrown — because they carry all of life’s pain inside,” Acrostic Play features a total of 135 pieces paired with humorous illustrations and photographs. Life Pattern Korea. The content is loosely grouped into six themes:
1. When life feels dry,
2. When no one wants to play with you,
3. When you want life to slow down,
4. When even coffee can’t comfort you,
5. When you want to loosen up your routine,
6. When your mind needs a touch of emotion.
These groupings are like the space between stanzas in a poem — not rigid categories, but a soft rhythm to guide the flow. Life Pattern Korea.
Sometimes, we all feel the need to clear our heads. You might enjoy simply flipping to a random page and trying out a verse. But if you focus on the deeper meanings of the given words and build your own acrostics, this book can become your personal collection of poetic creations.
We hope readers will fall for the charm of these witty Korean wordplays — and maybe, just maybe, grow into poets themselves through this delightful two-line journey. Life Pattern Korea.
