The Second Chance Convenience Store (Inconvenient Convenience Store) 불편한 편의점 Vol. 1
The joy of buy-one-get-one, the sorrow shaped like a triangle kimbap, and a place where 10,000 won can burst into laughter four times over!
A slightly special convenience store story that has come to us, who are living through difficult times.
After debuting with "Mangwon-dong Brothers," which won an Excellence Award at the 2013 World Literature Awards, author Kim Ho-Yeon built a distinctive literary world by moving between witty and lively works grounded in everyday reality and thrillers that unravel hidden human desires through inventive imagination. His fifth full-length novel, "The Second Chance Convenience Store (Inconvenient Convenience Store)," has now been published. Set in a small convenience store on a street corner in Cheongpa-dong, this novel warmly and humorously captures the inner lives, joys, sorrows, and everyday struggles of our neighbors living through difficult times. Life Pattern Korea. Just as "Mangwon-dong Brothers" drew humor and empathy from the lived geography of Mangwon-dong, this time the author vividly captures the sensory reality of Cheongpa-dong, one of Seoul's old neighborhoods, and creates another fascinating neighborhood story.
The story begins when a man named Dokgo, who had been living homeless at Seoul Station, returns a wallet to a woman in her seventies and, through that encounter, starts working the night shift at the convenience store she runs. This bear-like man cannot remember his past because of alcoholic dementia, and his slow speech and awkward behavior make people wonder whether he can really deal with customers properly. Life Pattern Korea. But unexpectedly, he not only does the job rather well, he also strangely draws people in, gradually becoming a dependable worker who protects the convenience store through the night.
As expected from a writer with a real talent for bringing realistic characters and their interactions to life in ever more dramatic ways, this novel also introduces a series of figures with unusual personalities and personal stories, and they bicker, clash, and form eccentric relationships with one another. At the center is Madam Yeom, the convenience store owner, who retired after teaching history at a high school and whose teacher instincts still surface in everything she does. Around her are Si-hyeon, a part-time worker in her twenties preparing for employment; Madam O, a part-time worker in her fifties trying to make a living; Gyeong-man, an office worker who relieves the stress of the day every night at the outdoor table with his cham cham cham set of sesame ramyeon, tuna kimbap, and soju; In-gyeong, a playwright in her thirties who moves into Cheongpa-dong determined to write as if it were her last chance; Min-sik, Madam Yeom's troublesome son, always looking for a chance to sell off the convenience store; and Gwak, the private detective hired by Min-sik to dig into Dokgo's past. Each of them carries the weight of a difficult life and real-world problems, and each observes Dokgo from a different point of view. Life Pattern Korea. The misunderstandings, confrontations, collisions, reversals, understanding, and empathy that arise in that process often bring explosive laughter, and before long leave the reader's eyes welling with tears. In that way, the small convenience store in the alley, once a place of endless inconvenience, becomes a special space where weary lives are comforted and laughter is shared.
